Unfair Bank Charges

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

I’m sure i’m not the only person to fall victim to unfair charges on overdrafts and bounced cheques.

I had cause to get annoyed this morning. A letter hit the doormat from my “customer friendly” informing me that I was being fined £30 for a cheque that had pushed us over our limit by about £10, on the day that our wages went into the account. So essentially the was out of pocket for about an hour. How they can justify a £30 charge for administration fees I have no idea, looking at the letter it is plainly obvious that the only human hand that touched it was the postman, a rule was triggered, the letter was printed, folded, put in an envelople and dropped into an outgoing mail bag.

So to business, straight over to the Money Programme website and into their article on Are penalty charges bank robbery? (well frankly, yes they are). They provide a handy pre-written letter which has all the juicy bits in it that you can print, add your details and shove in your manager’s face.

This I did, first thing this morning. Charge cancelled :)
